Nutrient Enhancement in The Willapa Bay Watershed
We started an official program in 1999 to place salmon carcasses in the streams to increace nutrients. During the 2001/2002 season we placed about 15,000 carcasses in the streams at 35 sites. Prior to Nutrient Enhancement a small number of Juvenile Salmon were present at sites, after nutrient enhancement we observed a large increase in Juveniles at the sites. The Juvenile salmon are very dependent upon nutrient levels to survive in the stream for up to 18 months before migrating to the ocean.
