Mill Pond Creek, a community salmon stream restoration project located in South Bend, WA. This site was the location of the first sawmill in Pacific County, built in 1880. The Sawmill diverted the small stream into a ditch and effectively eliminated all salmon spawning. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1940, and was occupied by the Washington Department of Transportation, as a storage site until 2001, when we restored the stream. The photos show the site before construction and after construction.
We have now planted Chum salmon in the stream for the first time in 120 years. Partners: WDOT, City of South Bend, Weyerhaeuser, Willapa Bay Organization, South Bend Boy Scouts, South Bend School District.
Funded By: Washington State Salmon Recovery Board, Willapa Bay Fisheries Enhancement Group, Department of Fish and Wildlife, FishAmerica, Weyerhaeuser.
